The Gambia is on course to surpass the one-million registered voters mark ahead of the 5 December 2026 Presidential Election.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is expected to announce the final number of registered voters following the 2026 Supplementary Voter Registration Exercise, building on the 962,157 voters recorded in the 2021 final register.

How significant is the increase? What do the latest figures tell us? Find out more in this infographic news report.

There were 962,157 registered voters on The Gambia’s final voter register for the 4 December 2021 Presidential Election.

According to the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) initially registered 987,824 voters during the 2021 General Voter Registration Exercise, conducted between 29 May and 11 July.

However, following verification, the figure was reduced to 962,157. This represents a difference of 25,667 registrations between the initial and final figures.

For comparison, The Gambia had 886,578 registered voters in 2016, meaning the final register increased by 75,579 voters (approximately 8.5%) by 2021.

Fast-forward to 2026, and the IEC conducted a Supplementary Voter Registration Exercise, during which 212,095 registrations were recorded. 212,095 is not yet the final number of additional voters. The IEC Vice Chairman explained that this was raw field data, including replacements, reprints and spoiled or damaged cards.

Of these, 24,058 registrations were initially flagged as duplicate registrations. The IEC subsequently reported that its cross-matching and adjudication process reduced the number of persons involved in multiple registrations to 14,334.

24,058 and 14,334 are different measurements. The first refers to suspected duplicate registrations/records initially identified; the latter refers to individuals involved in multiple registrations after adjudication.

In addition, 1,694 registered voters are reportedly the subject of objections, with the revising courts' process nearing completion.

The final outcome of the verification, adjudication and objection processes will determine how many additional voters are incorporated into the existing master register.

Will The Gambia cross the one-million registered voters mark ahead of the 5 December 2026 Presidential Election?

One thing is certain: the final voter register will be an important number to watch as the country prepares for the polls.
