In a move to modernise higher education in The Gambia, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) on Thursday, 24th April 2025, officially launched the TITA mobile application—an innovative digital platform aimed at transforming tertiary education management.

Developed by TITA Universal Services Ltd., a Nigeria-based IT firm, the app leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to streamline academic processes. It allows students to register for courses, pay tuition fees, track their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), and submit assignments directly to lecturers—all from a single mobile interface.

In her welcoming remarks, MoHERST Permanent Secretary Madam Jainaba Jagne highlighted the importance of the launch, describing the TITA app as a timely intervention aligned with the ministry’s broader vision to enhance the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of tertiary education in the country.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey toward digitising education. We are committed to ensuring that our institutions are not left behind in this digital era,” she stated.

Representing TITA Universal Services Ltd., Miss Aminata Aisha explained that the app was built to make education smarter, simpler, and more connected. “With TITA, both students and lecturers can easily access vital services, making academic life more efficient,” she noted.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Higher Education Professor Pierre Gomez hailed the initiative as part of his ministry’s transformative agenda. “We are in 2025—we cannot continue using methods from 1965. Technology must be embraced to make education more effective,” he said, urging both students and faculty to fully utilise the platform.

According to the Annual Progress Report for the year 2023, the Recovery Focused National Development Plan 2023 to 2027 aims to achieve nationwide use of digital/ICT infrastructure like broadband.

According to the report, “Inadequate digital skills continue to affect the country’s drive towards digitising the economy. In addition, low prioritisation of ICT infrastructure development also affects the sector. A good number of public and private institutions have very low ICT infrastructure, thus affecting effective and efficient service delivery.”
