On Wednesday, 7th May 2025, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) hosted a high-level workshop at the Senegambia Beach Hotel to formally adopt its Generic Sexual Harassment Policy for the Workplace. The event brought together key stakeholders from government institutions, the private sector, and civil society to address the urgent and growing issue of sexual harassment in professional settings.

In his opening remarks, NHRC Chairperson Emmanuel D. Joof emphasised the critical need for institutional action. “Sexual harassment is not just a women’s issue—it is a development and governance issue,” he said. “It’s about creating a just society where everyone feels safe and valued in the workplace.” He underscored that the new policy serves as a practical guide for institutions to prevent and address sexual harassment with transparency and accountability. Joof urged both public and private organisations to adopt and implement the policy without delay, stating that it should become standard practice across all sectors.

Representing the business community, Ms Maimuna Corr of the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) praised the NHRC’s policy as a vital tool for change. “This policy provides a practical framework to create workplaces free from harassment, where everyone can reach their full potential,” she said. Corr highlighted the broader consequences of inaction, noting, “Sexual harassment is an issue of dignity, equity, and human rights. It undermines individual well-being, morale, and productivity. Our response must be proactive and unwavering.”

Delivering the keynote address, Hon. Babucarr Boye, Minister of Public Service, Administrative Reforms, Coordination, and Policy Delivery, reaffirmed the government’s full support for the initiative. “We cannot achieve sustainable development if our workplaces are not safe for all,” he stated.

The NHRC’s initiative was widely lauded as a landmark step toward fostering safer, more inclusive, and equitable workplaces across The Gambia.
