Dr Ismaila Ceesay Minister for Information
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION, MEDIA AND BRAODCASTING SERVICES ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO INFORMATION – 28TH SEPTEMBER 2025
Banjul, The Gambia - Today, we join the global community in commemorating the International Day for Universal Access to Information under the theme: “Ensuring Access to Environmental Information in the Digital Age.” This year’s theme reminds us that access to accurate and reliable information is not only essential for democracy and good governance but also for safeguarding our environment and securing a sustainable future.
The Government of The Gambia has made significant strides in advancing access to information. The enactment of the Access to Information Act, 2021 was a historic milestone positioning The Gambia among progressive nations that recognize the right to information as a fundamental pillar of good governance. The subsequent establishment of the Information Commission has strengthened our institutional capacity to enforce this right, ensuring that ensuring that this right is not only recognized but also effectively enforced.
As a government, we remain committed to openness, transparency, and accountability. We will continue to prioritize capacity building and multi-stakeholder collaboration with civil society, the media, and development partners to ensure that the ATI law is fully implemented and accessible to all Gambians.
On this occasion, we reaffirm our dedication to building a transparent, inclusive, and sustainable society where every citizen has access to information including environmental information in this digital age so that together, we can protect our democracy, our environment, and our future.
