Nationwide Training to Strengthen Women Victims’ Access to Gender-Sensitive Reparations Begins

BANJUL, THE GAMBIA, 14 September 2026 – by the Reparations Commission

The Gambia Reparations Commission, together with the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), the Alliance of Victim-Led Organizations (AVLO), and with support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), will conduct a nationwide capacity-building training programme for women victims on gender-sensitive forms of reparations.

The training will take place from 14th to 20th September 2026 across the West Coast, North Bank, Lower River, Central River and Upper River Regions, reaching approximately 300 women victims. The programme aims to strengthen women victims’ understanding of reparations, their rights and how to access and participate in the reparations process. It also aims to enhance victims' knowledge of the mandate and work of the Reparations Commission taking into account gender sensitive approaches to Reparations.

The training will highlight challenges women face in accessing reparations and how the Reparations Commission is working to mitigate these challenges in The Gambia by drawing inspiration from global practice. The outreach will also provide an opportunity to identify and support eligible women victims who have not yet registered with the Commission. Using inclusive and participatory approaches such as group discussions, storytelling, role plays, visual aids and explanations in local languages, participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences, identify barriers and make recommendations for more accessible and gender-sensitive reparations.

Together, the implementing partners reaffirm our commitment to an accessible gender sensitive and gender responsive approach to reparations in The Gambia.

About the Reparations Commission

The Reparations Commission was established by an Act of Parliament in 2023 and became operational in 2025 to implement the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) recommendations on reparations. Its mandate includes facilitating compensation, rehabilitation, and restitution for victims of human rights violations committed between July 1994 and January 2017.
