Omar Badjie’s Coroners Inquest Recommends Criminal Proceedings Against Police Officers

The coroner's inquest into the death of Omar Badjie, which sparked protests in Lamin Mandinary, has concluded that his death was caused by police officers who assaulted him physically. The press release issued today from the Office of the Chief Justice recommends the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to consider criminal proceedings against the police officers involved.

Askanwi can reveal that four police officers were initially arrested in connection with Omar Badjie’s death, and after being published on the Gambia Police Force Facebook page, their names were removed. These are Constable Sulayman Jarju, Constable Mamdy Jallow, Constable Ebrima Touray and Constable Fa Sainey Cham. The officers were stationed in Jamburr, Kunariko, Lamin and Banjulinding.

PRESS RELEASE: CORONER'S INQUEST INTO THE DEATH OF OMAR BADJIE OF MANDINARIN VILLAGE, (WCR)

The office of His Lordship the Chief Justice the Hon. Hassan B. Jallow wishes to inform the general public that the Hon. Chief Justice has now received the report of Her Worship Anna O. Mendy Principal Magistrate and Coroner into the death of one Omar Badjie.

It will be recalled that this sad event occurred on 26th September 2025 following the intervention of Police officers at Mandinarin village West Coast Region (WCR) in the course of law enforcement operations.

The Coroner examined twelve witnesses, reviewed the post mortem report on the deceased person and visited the scene of the incident.

The Coroner's verdict is that Omar Badjie died due to acute brain injury resulting from physical exertion, stress and assault occasioned by the Police officers in the course of their pursuit of the deceased.

The Coroner has recommended that the matter be referred to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for consideration of criminal proceedings against the Police Officers involved.

His Lordship the Hon. Chief Justice having examined the record of proceedings of the inquest pursuant to Section 10 of the Coroners Act is satisfied as to the correctness, legality, propriety of the findings and verdict and as to the regularity of the proceedings.

His Lordship the Hon. Chief Justice has accordingly forwarded the record of proceedings of the inquest to the Hon. Attorney General and to the Director of Public Prosecutions for necessary action.

The office of the Chief Justice wishes to record its appreciation to the Hon. Anna O. Mendy the Coroner and to all the witnesses and all others who assisted in the inquiry.

The office of the Hon. Chief Justice looks forward to the continued cooperation of all concerned to ensure the implementation of the recommendations of the Coroner.
