Three-Year-Old Saikou Drammeh Passes Away After Unsuccessful Operation

Saikou Drammeh, a three-year-old boy from Tanji, passed away after an unsuccessful operation on Thursday, 27th August 2026. Askanwi Media had published a report about Saikou Drammeh on 31st May 2026, appealing for support for the boy, who was left with an opening in his stomach through which he passed stool.

Saikou’s father, Alhagie Drammeh, had already lost a son during the Acute Kidney Injury outbreak back in 2022. Through Askanwi Media, Alhagie Drammeh had sought support for his son to undergo an operation, but the operation was unsuccessful, as the boy passed away last week.

Speaking to his grieving father late last week, our reporter was informed of his untimely death.

According to the medical certificate of death seen by Askanwi Media, Saikou was brought in suffering from “sickle cell disease post-op pull-through for Hirschsprung” on 27th August 2026, where he was admitted to the operating theatre.

The medical report indicates that the child passed away at 17:39, and the primary cause of death was “Acute Chest Syndrome,” while the secondary cause of death was “post op pull through for Hirschsprung disease in a sickle cell disease patient”.

Speaking to a medical expert, Askanwi can report that it became aware that Hirschsprung disease is a congenital condition in which nerve cells are missing from a portion of a baby’s large intestine, causing a bowel blockage.

To address this disease, a pull-through procedure is conducted, which is described as a major surgery that removes the unhealthy, nerve-missing section of the large intestine and connects the healthy, functioning bowel directly to the anus.
